The Citi Strata Elite is Citi’s premium travel credit card, launched in 2025. It carries a $595 annual fee and competes with the Chase Sapphire Reserve and American Express Platinum by offering airport lounge access, elevated earning rates through the Citi Travel portal, and multiple annual credits.
The card operates within the ThankYou Points ecosystem. Points are transferable to airline partners, providing flexibility for travel redemptions.
How the ThankYou Points System Works
The Strata Elite uses a tiered earning structure that rewards Citi Travel portal bookings and introduces time-based dining bonuses.
Earning Rates
- 12x points on hotels, car rentals, and attractions booked through Citi Travel
- 6x points on air travel booked through Citi Travel
- 6x points on dining during “Citi Nights” (Fridays and Saturdays, 6 PM–6 AM ET)
- 3x points on dining at all other times
- 1.5x points on all other purchases
The 1.5x base rate on non-category spending distinguishes this card from competitors with 1x base rates. Every purchase outside bonus categories still earns above the standard 1x floor.
Citi Nights Dining Bonus
The 6x dining rate applies only during specified hours on Fridays and Saturdays (6 PM–6 AM Eastern Time). Outside these windows, dining earns 3x points. This creates a time-dependent optimization opportunity for users willing to concentrate weekend dining on the card.
Point Valuation and Transfer
Points transfer to airline partners at 1:1 ratios. Partners include American Airlines AAdvantage, JetBlue TrueBlue, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, and Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer.
The American Airlines partnership is notable—Citi is the only major transferable points issuer with direct AA transfers. Users who fly American may find particular value in this relationship.
Annual Credits
The Strata Elite includes several credits designed to offset the annual fee.
$300 Annual Hotel Credit
Up to $300 in statement credits per calendar year applies to hotel bookings of two or more nights made through Citi Travel. The two-night minimum is a usage requirement.
$200 Splurge Credit
Up to $200 annually applies to purchases at two chosen merchant partners. Current partners include 1stDibs, American Airlines, Best Buy, Future Personal Training, and Live Nation. Cardholders select their preferred partners.
$200 Blacklane Chauffeur Credit
Up to $100 every six months (totaling $200 annually) applies to Blacklane airport transfer services. This is a specific transportation service, not general rideshare.
$120 Global Entry/TSA PreCheck Credit
The card covers the application fee for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, available once every four years.
Total Credit Value
Annual credits total approximately $820 if fully utilized:
- Hotel: $300
- Splurge: $200
- Blacklane: $200
- Global Entry: $30/year effective (prorated from $120/4 years)
This exceeds the $595 annual fee, though realizing full value requires specific usage patterns.
Lounge Access
The Strata Elite provides two lounge access benefits.
Priority Pass Select
Complimentary Priority Pass Select membership provides access to over 1,700 lounges worldwide. Cardholders can bring up to two guests at no additional cost.
American Airlines Admirals Club Passes
Cardholders receive four Admirals Club day passes per calendar year. These passes provide access when flying American Airlines, regardless of cabin class.
This benefit is more limited than unlimited Admirals Club membership but provides occasional access for AA travelers.
Travel Protections
The card includes standard travel insurance products.
MasterRental Coverage
Rental car damage and theft coverage is included. Coverage is primary outside the cardholder’s country of residence and secondary within it—the same structure as the Citi Strata Premier.
Trip Protections
Enhanced trip cancellation and interruption coverage applies to prepaid travel expenses. Trip delay protection is included.
Baggage Protection
Lost or damaged luggage protection provides reimbursement up to specified limits.
Citigold Discounts
Citi banking customers may receive annual fee discounts:
- Citigold customers: $145 annual fee discount (reducing fee to $450)
- Citigold Private Client: First year fee waived, $145 discount in subsequent years
These discounts create a different value equation for existing Citi banking relationship holders.
Comparison to Competitors
The Strata Elite positions differently from Chase Sapphire Reserve ($550) and Amex Platinum ($895):
| Feature | Strata Elite | Sapphire Reserve | Amex Platinum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annual Fee | $595 | $550 | $895 |
| Base Earning | 1.5x | 1x | 1x |
| Portal Earning | 6x–12x | 5x–10x | 5x |
| Dining Earning | 3x–6x | 3x | 1x |
| Lounge Access | Priority Pass + 4 AA passes | Priority Pass + Sapphire | Centurion + Priority Pass + Sky Club |
| Hotel Credit | $300 (portal, 2+ nights) | $300 (broad travel) | $600 (FHR/THC) |
| AA Transfers | Yes | No | No |
The Strata Elite’s unique value lies in AA transfers and the 1.5x base rate. Users who fly American Airlines frequently may find the transfer partnership particularly valuable.
Tradeoffs, Risks, and Limitations
Portal Dependency
The elevated earning rates (6x–12x) require booking through Citi Travel. Direct bookings with airlines and hotels earn lower rates.
Hotel Credit Minimum Stay
The $300 hotel credit requires a two-night minimum stay through Citi Travel. Single-night bookings do not qualify.
Time-Based Dining Bonus
The 6x dining rate applies only during Citi Nights (weekend evenings). Weekday dining earns 3x, which is competitive but lower than the headline rate.
Limited Admiral Club Access
Four day passes per year provide occasional access, not regular use. Frequent AA travelers who want consistent lounge access would need Admirals Club membership separately.
Smaller Transfer Partner Network
ThankYou Points partners include fewer hotel options than Chase Ultimate Rewards (no Hyatt) or Amex Membership Rewards. The airline network is competitive, particularly with AA included.
Regional and Regulatory Frameworks
The Citi Strata Elite is a U.S. consumer credit product issued by Citibank, N.A. It is subject to federal consumer protection laws including TILA and the CARD Act.
The card’s benefits and transfer partners are structured for U.S.-based cardholders. International travelers can use the card abroad without foreign transaction fees.
Common Misconceptions
“The 6x dining rate applies to all restaurant purchases.” The 6x rate applies only during Citi Nights (Fridays and Saturdays, 6 PM–6 AM ET). All other dining earns 3x.
“Admirals Club access is unlimited.” Cardholders receive four day passes per year, not membership. Access is limited to those four visits.
“The $300 hotel credit works like the Sapphire Reserve travel credit.” The credit requires a two-night minimum booking through Citi Travel. It is less flexible than the Reserve’s $300 credit, which applies to broad travel purchases.
“ThankYou Points transfer to Hyatt.” Unlike Chase Ultimate Rewards, ThankYou Points do not transfer to World of Hyatt. This is a gap for Hyatt loyalists.
