The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card is the premium tier of Marriott’s co-branded credit card portfolio. It provides the highest level of automatic elite status and the most valuable free night certificate available from any Marriott card.
The card carries a $650 annual fee and is designed for travelers who stay frequently at Marriott properties and can utilize the suite of credits and lounge access benefits.
How the Rewards System Works
The Brilliant card earns Marriott Bonvoy points through a tiered structure. Points are credited to the cardholder’s Marriott Bonvoy account and can be redeemed across 30+ brands and 10,000+ properties globally.
Earning Rates
The card provides competitive earning at hotels and in travel-related categories:
- Marriott Bonvoy Hotels: Earns 6 points per $1 spent at participating properties. With Platinum Elite status, cardholders can earn up to 21 total points per dollar on eligible stays.
- Flights and Dining: Earns 3 points per $1 on flights booked directly with airlines and at restaurants worldwide.
- All Other Purchases: Earns 2 points per $1 on all other eligible purchases.
Unlike mid-tier Marriott cards, the Brilliant does not have capped bonus categories.
Redemption Mechanics
Marriott uses dynamic pricing for award nights. Points can be transferred to 40+ airline partners at a 3:1 ratio, with a 5,000-mile bonus on transfers of 60,000+ points.
Automatic Platinum Elite Status
Cardholders receive Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite status for as long as the account remains open. This is the highest status automatically provided by any Marriott credit card.
Platinum Elite Benefits
Platinum is the third tier of Marriott’s loyalty program and includes significant stay enhancements:
- 50% Point Bonus: A 50% bonus on base points earned during stays.
- Suite Upgrades: Space-available upgrades to suites at select properties.
- 4 p.m. Late Checkout: Guaranteed when available.
- Welcome Gift Choice: Choose between points, breakfast, or amenity at check-in.
- Annual Choice Benefit: At 50 Elite Nights, choose from benefits like Suite Night Awards or gift Elite Night Credits.
- Complimentary Breakfast: At select properties (depends on brand).
Platinum status provides tangible upgrades that mid-tier Gold status lacks, particularly the suite upgrade possibility and enhanced welcome gift choices.
Elite Night Credits
The card provides the highest head start toward ambassadorial status in the Marriott program.
Annual Credits
Cardholders receive 25 Elite Night Credits each calendar year. This is 10 more than the Bountiful/Bevy cards provide.
These credits count toward:
- Titanium Elite: Requires 75 nights. With 25 credits, only 50 actual nights are needed.
- Ambassador Elite: Requires 100 nights + $20,000 annual spending at Marriott. The card’s 25 credits reduce the requirement to 75 actual nights.
Annual Free Night Award
The Brilliant card includes an automatic annual Free Night Award—no spending threshold required.
Award Parameters
The certificate is valid at properties with a redemption level of up to 85,000 Marriott Bonvoy points. This is significantly higher than the 35,000-point Boundless certificate or the 50,000-point Bountiful/Bevy certificates.
The 85,000-point ceiling provides access to luxury properties including select Ritz-Carlton, W Hotels, and Edition locations. Cardholders can combine up to 15,000 additional points to reach properties costing up to 100,000 points.
Annual Credits and Benefits
$300 Dining Credit
Cardholders receive up to $300 in statement credits annually ($25 per month) for eligible restaurant purchases worldwide. This credit applies automatically to dining transactions.
The dining credit provides direct offset against the annual fee, reducing the effective cost to $350.
Priority Pass Select Membership
The card includes enrollment in Priority Pass™ Select, providing unlimited visits to over 1,200 airport lounges globally. Cardholders can bring up to two guests per visit at no additional charge.
Priority Pass access is valued at approximately $429 per year if purchased separately. For frequent travelers, this benefit alone can justify a significant portion of the annual fee.
$100 Luxury Property Credit
Cardholders receive a $100 credit for qualifying charges at The Ritz-Carlton or St. Regis properties when booking a two-night minimum stay directly and paying with the card.
Global Entry/TSA PreCheck Credit
The card provides a statement credit for Global Entry ($100 every 4 years) or TSA PreCheck ($85 every 4.5 years) application fees.
Brilliant Choice Award
After spending $60,000 on eligible purchases in a calendar year, cardholders earn a Brilliant Earned Choice Award. This allows selection from premium benefits such as additional free nights or elite status extensions.
Financial Structure
Fee Mechanics
- $650 Annual Fee: Not waived for the first year.
- No Foreign Transaction Fees: The card does not charge fees for international purchases.
- Variable APR: Interest rates are tied to the Prime Rate.
Intended User Profile
The Brilliant card is structured for:
- Heavy Marriott Travelers: Individuals who stay at Marriott properties 30+ nights per year and utilize Platinum status benefits.
- Airport Lounge Users: Travelers who fly frequently and value Priority Pass access for themselves and guests.
- Luxury Property Guests: Users who book at Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, or other high-tier Marriott brands where the 85,000-point free night applies.
- Credit Maximizers: Those who can fully utilize the $300 dining credit and other annual benefits.
Tradeoffs, Risks, and Limitations
High Annual Fee
The $650 annual fee requires significant benefit utilization to break even. Users who do not use Priority Pass, the dining credit, or stay at luxury properties may not extract sufficient value.
Platinum vs. Titanium Gap
While Platinum status is valuable, the Brilliant card does not automatically provide Titanium or Ambassador status. Users seeking the highest tier must still earn 50–75 actual nights beyond the card’s 25 credits.
Breakfast Not Universal
Complimentary breakfast for Platinum members is limited to select brands. At many Marriott properties, breakfast is a points or paid option even with Platinum status.
Amex Acceptance
American Express is less widely accepted than Visa or Mastercard. Travelers should carry a backup card.
One Marriott Card Per Issuer
Marriott restricts cardholders to one Marriott card per issuer. Holding the Brilliant means not holding the Bevy (both are Amex). Users wanting both Chase and Amex Marriott benefits must choose the Brilliant for Amex and Boundless or Bountiful for Chase.
Regional and Regulatory Frameworks
The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card is a U.S. consumer product. American Express uses proprietary credit models for approval. The card is subject to Amex’s “once-in-a-lifetime” welcome bonus rules for Marriott products.
Common Misconceptions
“The free night works at any Marriott property.”
The certificate is capped at 85,000 points. Some ultra-luxury properties (certain Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis locations) price above this threshold.
“I get automatic Titanium status.”
The card provides Platinum status, not Titanium. Titanium requires 75 qualifying nights, reduced to 50 with the card’s 25 credits.
“Priority Pass includes all airport lounges.”
Priority Pass covers participating lounges only. Airline-operated lounges (Delta Sky Club, United Club, etc.) are generally not included.
“The $300 dining credit applies to any food purchase.”
The credit applies specifically to restaurant transactions. Grocery stores, cafes, and food delivery services may not code as restaurants and may not trigger the credit.
