The Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card is an entry-level co-branded credit card issued by American Express in partnership with Delta Air Lines. It is designed for infrequent travelers and general consumers who want to accumulate SkyMiles without an annual fee commitment.
The card occupies the base tier of Delta’s co-branded card lineup. It provides mile-earning capabilities and limited travel benefits without the overhead costs associated with higher-tier products. For a broader view of the Delta card ecosystem, see our Delta SkyMiles credit cards comparison.
What the Delta SkyMiles Blue Card Is
The Delta SkyMiles Blue American Express Card is a no-annual-fee card that links directly to a Delta SkyMiles account.
The system operates through three core mechanisms:
- Mile Accumulation: Everyday purchases generate SkyMiles at fixed ratios.
- In-Flight Savings: A statement credit reduces the cost of onboard purchases.
- Flexible Redemption: The “Pay with Miles” feature allows miles to offset flight costs.
Because the card has no annual fee, there is no recurring cost to offset through benefits.
How Miles are Earned and Distributed
The card uses a tiered structure based on merchant classification.
Earning Multipliers
- 2 Miles per $1: Earned on eligible Delta purchases, including flights, seat upgrades, and in-flight purchases.
- 2 Miles per $1: Earned at restaurants worldwide, including takeout and delivery in the United States.
- 1 Mile per $1: Earned on all other eligible purchases.
Miles are transferred to the linked SkyMiles account after each billing period closes.
Merchant Category Code (MCC) Logic
The system classifies eligible spending based on MCCs provided by the merchant’s payment processor. A restaurant located inside a hotel or entertainment venue may code under the parent establishment’s primary category rather than as a restaurant, which could affect the earning rate.
How In-Flight Savings are Applied
The card provides a 20% statement credit on eligible in-flight purchases.
Eligible Purchases
Statement credits apply to purchases of food, beverages, and audio headsets made during Delta flights. The discount is applied as a statement credit after the transaction posts.
Scope Limitations
The 20% credit applies only to purchases made on Delta-operated flights. It does not extend to partner-operated flights, lounge purchases, or pre-flight airport retail.
How Pay with Miles Works
The “Pay with Miles” feature allows cardholders to apply SkyMiles directly toward the cost of Delta flights.
Redemption Mechanics
When booking on delta.com, cardholders can select the “Pay with Miles” option to use SkyMiles at a fixed rate of 5,000 miles for $50 off the ticket price. This can be applied in increments, reducing the cash portion of the fare.
Value Calculation
At 5,000 miles per $50, the redemption value equals 1 cent per mile. This rate is fixed and does not fluctuate based on route, cabin class, or demand.
What the Card Does Not Include
The Delta SkyMiles Blue card omits several features found on fee-bearing Delta cards.
No Free Checked Bags
Unlike the Delta SkyMiles Gold, Platinum, or Reserve cards, the Blue card does not waive first checked bag fees. Cardholders pay Delta’s standard baggage pricing.
No Priority Boarding
The card does not grant priority boarding. Boarding group assignment follows the airline’s standard process based on fare class and SkyMiles status.
No TakeOff 15 Discount
The Blue card does not include the “TakeOff 15” benefit, which provides a 15% discount on award flights. That feature is available on the Gold, Platinum, and Reserve cards.
No Sky Club Access
The card does not provide access to Delta Sky Club lounges. Lounge entry requires elite status, day passes, or higher-tier cards.
How the Card Generates Costs and Fees
Because the card has no annual fee, ongoing costs are limited to interest.
Interest and APR Mechanics
The card carries a variable APR applied to any balance not paid in full by the due date. Interest is calculated on the average daily balance. At typical credit card rates, carrying a balance quickly erodes the value of miles earned.
No Foreign Transaction Fees
The card does not charge foreign transaction fees. Purchases made outside the United States use the American Express network’s exchange rates without an added surcharge. American Express may have lower merchant acceptance in some international regions compared to Visa or Mastercard.
Additional Protections
As an American Express product, the card includes secondary insurance and consumer protections.
Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance
The card provides secondary coverage for theft or damage to rental vehicles when the cardholder declines the rental company’s collision waiver and uses the card for the rental. Secondary coverage applies after personal auto insurance.
Purchase Protection
Eligible items purchased with the card are covered for a limited period if they are stolen or accidentally damaged, subject to dollar limits.
Extended Warranty
Products purchased with the card that have a manufacturer’s warranty of five years or less may receive an additional year of coverage.
Regional and Regulatory Differences
The Delta SkyMiles Blue American Express Card is a U.S. consumer credit product issued by American Express National Bank and subject to federal regulations including the Truth in Lending Act (TILA).
Geographic Availability
The card is available to U.S. residents. The “2x at restaurants worldwide” benefit acknowledges international use, though the card is issued only to domestic applicants.
SkyMiles Expiration
Delta SkyMiles do not expire. Miles remain in the account regardless of card activity or account status.
Common Misconceptions About the Delta SkyMiles Blue Card
“This card includes a free checked bag.” No. The free checked bag benefit is not included with the Blue card. That feature is available on the Gold, Platinum, and Reserve tiers.
“I get TakeOff 15 to save on award flights.” No. The TakeOff 15 discount is not available on the Blue card. It is a benefit specific to higher-tier Delta cards.
“Pay with Miles is always a good value.” The fixed redemption rate of 1 cent per mile may be lower than the value achievable through other redemption methods, such as booking premium cabin award seats. The effective value depends on how the cardholder would otherwise use their miles.
“The 2x restaurant rate works everywhere in the world.” The 2x rate at restaurants applies worldwide, but American Express has lower merchant acceptance in some international regions. In areas where Amex is not accepted, the card cannot be used.
“My miles will expire if I don’t use the card.” Delta SkyMiles do not expire. The card is a tool for earning miles, but the miles remain in the account regardless of card activity.
