The American Express Marriott Bonvoy Business Credit Card earns Marriott Bonvoy points on all eligible purchases, earns 6x at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels, and includes complimentary Marriott Gold Elite status with a $125 annual fee. A Free Night Award (valid up to 35,000 points) is issued each card anniversary year.
What the product is structurally
The Marriott Bonvoy Business Card is a revolving credit card issued by American Express that earns Marriott Bonvoy points. Points are redeemable at Marriott-brand hotels worldwide, for flight transfers to over 40 airline partners (at 3:1 with a 5,000-mile bonus at 60,000 point conversions), and for other travel-adjacent products.
Marriott Gold Elite status provides enhanced points earning (25% bonus on paid stays), late checkout, and suite night award priority access at some brands.
The annual Free Night Award is capped at properties costing 35,000 points per night or fewer. A points top-up is allowed if the property costs more.
How it works in practice
Earn rates:
- 6x at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels
- 4x at U.S. restaurants
- 4x at U.S. gas stations
- 4x on wireless telephone services from U.S. providers
- 4x on U.S. purchases for shipping
- 4x on flights booked directly with airlines
- 2x on all other eligible purchases
Employee cards are available at no additional cost. A second welcome offer bonus is available upon first employee card approval.
The welcome offer for new cardholders includes three Free Night Awards (each valid up to 50,000 points) after meeting a defined minimum spend in the first months — a particularly high-value entry offer when Marriott properties at that threshold include many premium category options.
Fees and pricing mechanics
The annual fee is $125. No foreign transaction fees apply.
Marriott Bonvoy points carry an estimated redemption value of 0.6–0.9 cents per point for standard redemptions. Peak date and luxury-property redemptions can reduce effective CPP. The free night awards typically serve as the strongest per-dollar return on the annual fee offset.
Limits, eligibility, and availability
Eligibility requires a U.S. business entity and personal credit evaluation by American Express with personal guaranty.
Marriott Gold Elite status is card-tied. It does not represent permanently earned elite status and lapses if the account is closed. Cardholders who also hold a personal Marriott Bonvoy card may need to evaluate the co-brand credit overlap with Amex’s terms.
Tradeoffs, risks, or limitations
The earn structure places heavy weight on Marriott-specific spending and specific purchase categories. Businesses spending primarily in uncategorized areas earn 2x, translating to roughly 1.2–1.8 cents per dollar — lower than a flat-rate cash back card net of any annual fee.
The 35,000-point free night cap restricts the award to mid-tier properties. Higher-end Marriott brands (St. Regis, Ritz-Carlton) often exceed this threshold, requiring top-ups or separate redemptions for premium stays.
Compared to the Chase Marriott Bonvoy Bold or Boundless personal cards, the business card avoids Chase’s 5/24 rule since it’s issued by American Express.
